Education

Enhance campaign on education to increase enrollment of pupils in schools, with especial emphases on girl child enrolment and vocational sustainable livelihood skills development

The standard of education in South Sudan was already extremely low prior to the outbreak of the current civil war. According to the South Sudan 2011 Statistical Yearbook and 2013 Education and Management Information System (EMIS) of the Ministry of Education, 73 % of the men and 84 % of women above 15 years were illiterate, 60 % of the teachers were untrained or their qualifications were not known, three out of five school-aged children were not enrolled in the primary school and the pupil classroom ratio averaged 100. As a result, South Sudan today still has the lowest schooling coverage for education in all sub-sectors (pre-primary, primary, secondary and technical vocational education training) in the region. According to UNESCO, in 2018, at least 2.2 million children in South Sudan were estimated to be missing the opportunity for education.

Given the scenario above, our partners are expected to significantly contribute to all aspects and stages of the intervention in Education program to enable PASS conduct an assessment to identify gaps, engage stakeholders on the importance of education for both boys and girls, training of teacher, PTA’s and school management committees, form school peace clubs, provide educational materials and constructs of temporary learning spaces- TLS
